About the text:

This course is based on Ascent to Felicity (Maraqi al-Sa‘adat), a concise yet comprehensive manual on Islamic creed and the jurisprudence of worship by the late Ottoman Hanafi jurist, Imam Abu ’l-Ikhlas Hasan ibn ‘Ammar al-Shurunbulali (d. 1069 AH / 1659 CE).(firdousbooks.com)

The book is structured around the pillars of Islam. It covers:

Core beliefs (iman)

The detailed rulings of purification and prayer

Fasting

Zakat

Hajj

Imam Shurunbulali is best known for his larger primer Nur al-Idah and its famous commentary Maraqi al-Falah, both central texts in traditional Hanafi curricula. Both of these are taught at SeekersGuidance–at Level Two and Three [links]

Ascent to Felicity is his later, streamlined summary of the same subject matter, completed near the end of his life, making it an ideal “first full text” before tackling Nur al-Idah.

The English translation used in this course presents the full matn with clear, readable language. It is enriched with explanatory notes drawn from reliable works of Hanafi fiqh and Sunni theology, along with useful appendices—such as supplications related to the pillars and the etiquette of visiting the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace).(albalaghbooks.com)

All of this makes Ascent to Felicity particularly useful for you as a student: it is brief enough to complete and review, structured enough to memorize and map, yet detailed and reliable enough to guide real-life worship with clarity and confidence.

About the Author

Imam Abu ’l-Ikhlas Hasan ibn ‘Ammar al-Shurunbulali (d. 1069 AH / 1659 CE) was a major Egyptian Hanafi jurist and theologian of the Ottoman era. Born in Upper Egypt, he was taken as a child to Cairo, where he memorized the Quran and the Islamic sciences. In Cairo, he went on to study and teach at al-Azhar. He became one of the foremost Hanafi jurists (fuqaha’) of his time and a key reference for fatwa in the Hanafi school.

He is best known for his celebrated primer Nur al-Idah and its commentary Maraqi al-Falah. Both of these became standard texts in traditional Hanafi curricula across the world.

He is also famous for his supercommentary (hashiya) on the Durar of Mulla Khusro (one of the greatest early scholars of the Ottoman era. This work became famous as al-Shurunbulaliyya.

He wrote several dozen influential research treatises (rasa’il), and among his shorter works is his later concise summary Maraqi al-Sa‘adat (Ascent to Felicity).

Biographical works describe him as a muhaqqiq—a verifying scholar—whose writings form an integral part of the school, and as being from “the elite and distinguished jurists of his age, the most learned of them in fiqh and its texts, and abundant in authorship,” and later writers count him among the pillars of the Hanafi madhhab.

His kunya “Abu ’l-Ikhlas” (“the father of sincerity”) appears consistently with his name in the biographical and manuscript tradition, reflecting how he was remembered for his devotion, sincerity, and service to the Sacred Law.
